Jorge Andrés Galicia Rodríguez and Andrés Guilarte are two university students who lived in Venezuela under a democratically elected socialist regime, massive blackouts, and political persecution. The increase of government social programs, the nationalization of the country's oil industry, and corruption at the highest levels of government all contributed to a once prosperous nation's economic collapse. Venezuelan native Andrés Guilarte reveals how the socialism destroyed Venezuela—and how to protect America from the same fate. -- Andrés Guilarte is an activist for the freedom of Venezuela. Only a few years ago, he was a university student, studying international relations at the Central University of Venezuela. On top of exams and typical college student concerns, Andrés’ studies were interrupted by tear gas as government officials targeted students on campus. He spent his college years advocating for his fellow students and fighting back against the rise of tyranny and erosion of freedoms.

The Atlas Society's Student Programs Director, Ana Kugler, hosted an webinar with Andrés Guilarte from The Fund for American Studies (TFAS). Andrés had to leave his life in Venezuela, after an oppressive regime crippled the economy, caused widespread starvation, blanketed the nation in blackouts, and silenced and jailed those who dared to speak out and criticize the government.
